Thanks to Archbishop Mitty winning at the Santa Barbara TOC, unbeaten Granite Bay moves up to No. 1 in the state, which is believed to be the first time ever for a team from the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.

Note: This week’s rankings do not include any results from Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Once again Archbishop Mitty of San Jose found itself playing for the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions championship and despite trailing 2-1 the Monarchs rallied to defeat La Salle of Pasadena in five sets to defend their title. It was the second year in a row and fourth in the last six years that they have won the Santa Barbara TOC championship.

Clare Powers was named tournament MVP while Kelsey Crawford and Natasha Kosowicz were each named to the All Tournament Team. Haley DeSales and Cheri Raymundo from the Lancers were the other two selections to the All Tournament Team.

Because of the Monarchs winning and previous No. 1 Torrey Pines of San Diego losing twice in the same event, it was easy to move up previous No. 2 Granite Bay into the No. 1 slot for this week’s rankings.

The Grizzlies recently won the Super 8 Invitational but their big win this season was last month at the Stockton Classic, with Cal-Hi Sports in attendance, as they defeated Archbishop Mitty to win the first-place plaque.

No CIF Sac-Joaquin Section team has ever won the CIF Division I state title, which is what Granite Bay must to do stay on top and end as the State Team of the Year. In fact, a quick search of our files shows that a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section team also has never been No. 1 in the state before.

State Girls Volleyball Rankings

(Previous ranking in parentheses; through reported results of Monday night, Nov. 4)

1. (2) Granite Bay 35-0
Defending champion St. Francis of Sacramento is probably the toughest team the Grizzlies will meet in the D1 section playoffs.

2. (7) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 32-4
In addition to winning the title in Santa Barbara, the Monarchs also avenged their recent league loss to Valley Christian with a win over the Warriors in the semifinals.

3. (1) Torrey Pines (San Diego) 27-3
At Santa Barbara, the Falcons’ losses were to Dana Hills and Mira Costa. They still have two other much better tourney finishes so they only drop two spots in the rankings.

4. (5) Los Alamitos 26-5
The Griffins are back on top as the No. 1 team in Orange County.

5. (6) Valley Christian (San Jose) 27-6
In the third-place game at the Santa Barbara TOC, the Warriors topped Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in five games.

6. (8) Redondo (Redondo Beach) 27-5
Tourney MVP Brianna Lanktree led the Sea Hawks past Scripps Ranch of San Diego in the title match of the Redondo Power Classic.

7. (11) Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 22-5
The Sea Kings’ only loss at the Santa Barbara TOC was to Archbishop Mitty.

8. (9) Lakewood 24-5
Two more wins for the Lancers in the Moore League.

9. (10) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 28-5
This could be the scariest team in Southern California at the start of the CIFSS playoffs.

10. (12) Santiago (Corona) 33-0
The Sharks closed the regular season by sweeping Norco. They are No. 11 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings, which seems way too high because unlike Granite Bay (which has a win over Mitty) they haven’t played any opponent close to that level.

11. (13) La Salle (Pasadena) 25-5
It was a strong showing for the Lancers in Santa Barbara. Before losing to Mitty in the final, they had wins over Dana Hills and Mira Costa.

12. (4) Dana Hills (Dana Point) 21-6
Losses at Santa Barbara were to La Salle and Corona del Mar.

13. (14) Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) 19-8
Big match Tuesday night against Redondo was not included in these rankings.

14. (3) Francis Parker (San Diego) 21-4
The Lancers have to take a big hit after suffering a loss to Bishop’s of La Jolla, which is 20-10.

15. (NR) Scripps Ranch (San Diego) 32-2
Coach Ronni Olsen’s team recently went 7-1 at the La Jolla BCI and followed that up by going 6-1 in last week’s Redondo Power Classic, losing in the finals to the host school.

16. (15) Redwood (Larkspur) 37-4
A league loss to Branson doesn’t hurt much because the Giants will eventually be in the same NorCal division as Mitty and they have a better overall resume than Branson.

17. (17) Gregori (Modesto) 37-4
The Jaguars are still playing well after their two losses at the Stockton Classic.

18. (18) Menlo (Atherton) 24-5
The Knights figure to be a force in the D4 NorCal playoffs.

19. (NR) Branson (Ross) 27-6
Strong D5 state title favorites posted win over Redwood of Larkspur last week and should face the Giants again in this week’s league playoff final.

20. (NR) Marymount (Los Angeles) 21-8
Coach Cari Klein’s team seems to be hitting its stride entering the postseason. The Sailors are the defending D1 state champions.

Dropped Out: Previous No. 16 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad); No. 19 Lutheran (Orange); No. 20 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village).
