Inside the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book

Roschon Prince and Jordan Bell had much to be smiling about after their team at Long Beach Poly won at the buzzer on Friday night over St. John Bosco of Bellflower in the CIF Open Division playoffs.

Roschon Prince (left) and Jordan Bell etched their names into the state record book. Prince nailed 643 career three throws and Bell once blocked 16 shots in a game. Last summer, we saw Bell block 18 shots in a AAU game.

Congrats to Ahlisha Henderson of Reseda for breaking the state’s single-season rebounding record. Only one player has ever gone to the line more than Long Beach Poly’s Roschon Prince. Our stat stars feature begins a new focus of tracking upcoming milestones and honoring performances that make our exclusive state record book.

RECORD BOOK ENTRIES

Boys Basketball

Roschon Prince & Jordan Bell (Poly, Long Beach)
Unfortunately when Poly’s season came to an end against Mater Dei in the SoCal Open Division semifinals, the appearance of Kameron Chatman and all the hoopla that surrounded it overshadowed the great high school career on this duo. Prince played in 130 games (the state record is 146 by Chris Hernandez of Fresno Clovis West) and scored a reported school record 2,049 points. That entry doesn’t make the state record book, but considering Poly was 116-14 in that time span with balanced scoring teams it’s still an impressive number. Where Prince really excelled the last four years was getting to the free throw line. He muscled his way to the line 968 times and made 643, the No. 2 reported all-time mark in state history behind the 710 drained by Glendora’s Casey Jacobsen between 1996 and 1999. Only Glendora’s Tracy Murray nailed more in a single season (302 in 1989 when he led the nation in scoring) than Prince did his junior season when he made 264. During his junior season, Prince twice nailed 21 free throws in a single game (against Compton and Lakewood) to put his name in the record book in yet another category. Headed to USC, Prince was recently named Gatorade State Player of the Year. As for Bell, he excelled at blocking shots. During his junior season, he caught 16 of them in a 68-59 victory over Long Beach Jordan and went for double digit blocks three times in his junior season. Teams were more wary of him as a senior, but he still ended his final campaign with 155 blocked shots and a school record 337 career swats.

Girls Basketball

Ahlisha Henderson (Reseda)
With her team winning its first two games in the SoCal Division III regional playoffs, Henderson was able to surpass the single-season state rebounding record held by the legendary Terri Mann of San Diego Point Loma. Henderson had a reported 770 rebounds entering the regional playoffs and went for 18 points and 31 rebounds in a 57-40 first round win over Tehachapi to push her total to 801. She played even better in a 66-62 quarterfinal overtime victory over Cathedral Catholic of San Diego. She had 34 points and broke Mann’s long-standing record (set in the 1986-87 season) with 32 rebounds to push her reported total to 833. More importantly, Henderson knocked down two free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Reseda, coached by Henderson’s older sister, Brittany, took on Alemany of Mission Hills in a regional semifinal game. The Lady Regents were a bit overwhelmed, but Henderson was still able to corral 16 rebounds to finish with a season total of 849. Cal-Hi Sports congratulates Henderson, who was recently named L.A. City Section Player of the Year, on her fine season and for adding her name in the record book alongside legends such as Mann, Cheryl Miller and Courtney Paris.

Courtney Jaco (Windward, Los Angeles)
The USC-bound senior sharpshooter isn’t done yet and will continue to attempt to add to her 3-point record totals in the CIF Open Division state championship against Oakland Bishop O’Dowd on Saturday in Sacramento. After dropping in two 3-pointers in a Southern Regional Open Division semifinal 52-46 win over La Jolla Country Day and then going 6-for-12 in the Wildcats’ 81-71 SoCal title-game victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei, Jaco now has made 142 3-pointers this season and 408 for her career. The 142 3-pointers puts her at No. 3 on that list in the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book behind Danielle Viglione (169 in 1992 at Fair Oaks Del Campo), Renee Roberts (148 in 2004 at Stockton St. Mary’s). The 408 career 3-pointers maintains her position at No. 4 on that list as well. While she may be able to move up on the Most 3-Point Field Goals Made (Season) list with six or more treys against O’Dowd, she has little chance of climbing the career list. That’s headed by St. Mary’s Roberts’ with 447 from 2002-2005. She’s followed by Jake Kelly with 444 from 2003-2006 at Fair Oaks Sacramento Waldorf. After she plays her final high school game at Sleep Train Arena versus O’Dowd, Jaco will be falling in behind another Windward sharp-shooter, Monica DeAngelis. The current Loyola Marymount junior banged home 435 3-pointers from 2005-2008.

Erica McCall (Ridgeview, Bakersfield)
The Stanford-bound McDonalds All-American and Gatorade State Player of the Year will be etching her name in several places in the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book. Her team was flat and McCall looked a little tired after carrying it all season, but the 6-foot-3 star still had 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in the 60-42 Southern Regional Division II title-game loss to Lynwood. With the four blocks McCall finishes with 278 this season and 950 for her career. Both figures make her the all-time single season and career shot block queen. The season number passes Chris Enger who had 273 blocks in 1988 at Vista, while the career blocks also obliterates Enger’s 859 from 1986 to 1989. The 12 rebounds gives McCall 1,883 career rebounds, a number that gets her the No. 4 spot all-time on that list behind Courtney Paris (2,359 from 2002-2005 at Modesto Christian and Piedmont), Darshae Burnside of San Bernardino Cajon, who had 2,288 between 2006 and 2009, and Terri Mann, who had 2,256 from 1984-1987 at San Diego Point Loma. Besides being the CIF Central Section all-time leader in blocks and rebounds, the 19 points gives McCall 2,526 points, a point total that makes her the CIFCS No. 2 all-time scorer behind the 2,938 points from 1999-2002 by Nikki Blue of Bakersfield West.

RECORD BOOK TRACKER

Softball

Alyssa Palomino (Mission Viejo)
Lauren Chamberlain may lead the NCAA with 16 home runs this season, but her county record of 17 home runs hit in 2010 at El Toro is in serious jeopardy. Palomino, a sophomore, smacked two more home runs last Tuesday during an 11-3 win over Los Alamitos. On the year, she has 12 home runs after hitting seven her freshman year.

STAT STARS OF THE WEEK

Boys Basketball

Jordan Mathews (Santa Monica)
In a battle of Westside schools not too far from each other, the Cal recruit scored 41 points to help SoMoHi defeat Palisades in overtime, 76-63, the SoCal Div. I regional quarterfinal game. The son of UCLA assistant Phil Mathews, who began his prep career at J.W. North of Riverside, got major assistance from teammate Chris Smith. He tied the game on a free throw with 4.2 seconds remaining in regulation and scored three field goals in the extra period.

Malik Thames (Pleasant Grove, Elk Grove)
Nearly unstoppable at times against De La Salle in the NorCal Division I semifinals, Thames scored 31 points as the Eagles defeated the Spartans 68-51. The Eagles will now have a chance to become the first team in section history to capture a large-school state championship after he scored 17 points during Pleasant Grove’s 73-60 win over Deer Valley of Antioch to earn a trip to the CIF state finals.

Girls Basketball

Lacy Asdourian (Liberty Christian, Redding)
History may have been made when she made a free throw during the Patriots’ 67-55 win over Ripon Christian in the boys NorCal Division V regional playoffs. A junior, she decided to join the boys’ team after the school cancelled the season for the girls team.

Baseball

Sean Barry (Moorpark)

Trenton Brooks & Daniel Vasquez (Granite Hills, El Cajon)
The Eagles have soared up to No. 4 in our newest state baseball rankings in large part due to some impressive pitching. This duo combined to throw a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Cathedral Catholic of San Diego. Brooks pitched the first four innings before Vasquez pitched the final three against a team that was ranked No. 1 in the state.

Nick Chico (Northview, Covina)
Pitcher improved to 3-0 and was named MVP of the Dick’s Sporting Goods tourney as Northview defeated South Hills of Covina 5-3. The win also upped Northview’s record at the time to 5-0.

Jack Flaherty (Harvard-Westlake, North Hollywood)

A.J. Puckett (De La Salle, Concord)
In a game played right down the street from our Stockton office, Puckett pitched a five-inning no-hitter as the Spartans defeated three-time defending Sac-Joaquin Section champ St. Mary’s of Stockton, 10-0.

James Todd (San Pedro)
Threw a gem in beating Kennedy of Granada Hills 1-0. Todd pitched all 10 innings for the Pirates.

Softball

Gaby Arizaga (Huntington Beach)
For most players a two home-run game, during an 8-7 win over South East of South Gate, would be their best game of the week. Not so for this sophomore third baseman as the next day she hit three home runs in a 26-0 win over Jordan of Los Angeles.

Lake Campbell (St. Anthony, Long Beach)
Fanned 18 batters in a one-hit, complete game 3-0 shutout against Brethren Christian of Huntington Beach.

Katelyn Castro (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills)
Just a freshman, she could be a name to watch for in the upcoming years as she had a triple and homered while driving in six runs as the Trojans defeated Davis, 12-0.

Jayme Cone (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM)
With little room for error during a 1-0 win over Murrieta Valley at the Saddleback Valley Tournament this sophomore didn’t allow a hit while striking out six.

Andie Formby (Mater Dei, Santa Ana)
Just like the girls’ basketball team got some big time transfers this season, the Monarchs’ softball team did as well as this Virginia-bound pitcher came over from Los Alamitos. She earned tournament MVP honors at the Tournament of Champions in Arizona after striking out 25 batters and going 4-0 in the circle.

Rachel Garcia (Highland, Palmdale)
Highly-regarded sophomore pitched masterfully at the High Desert Classic, fanning 55 batters and allowing only nine hits and four runs in 24 innings. In a 2-0 victory over Burbank in the title game of the Hart Tournament, the UCLA commit allowed only two hits and struck out 14. In a 3-1 semifinal victory over Camarillo, the eventual tournament MVP fanned 16 and gave up only one hit. She struck out the first 11 batters she faced against Camarillo.

Amy Marks (St. Francis, Sacramento)
Went 5-for-5 with a double and six runs batted in during a 20-2 mercy rule shortened win over Christian Brothers of Sacramento.

London Miller (Waterford)
The Wildcats scored 14 runs in the fourth inning during their 17-0 win over Turlock Christian. London led the offense with two doubles, a homer and seven runs batted in. To get in the state record book, a team needs to score 24 runs in an inning.

Larisa Petakoff (Downey Calvary)
Went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in a 14-2 non-league win over Serrano of Phelan.

Megan Salazar (Buchanan, Clovis)
Showing off her powerful bat, Salazar had four hits, including two home runs, as she drove in eight runs during the Bears’ 14-3 win over Los Banos.

Paige von Sprecken (Yorba Linda)
In just their third year with a varsity softball program, this season has already seen a first as the Mustangs captured their first ever tournament title. Yorba Linda defeated Redlands East Valley, 8-0, in the championship game of the Brea Tournament. In the finals, von Sprecken struck out 12 and was named tournament MVP.

Christina Washington (Torrance)
In a consolation game at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz., Washington pitched a three-hitter against highly-regarded Centennial of Las Vegas. Washington helped her own cause by hitting a two-run homer and driving in another run.
